Blazing a trail for Aussie retail bankers
14/06/2017

A young banker working at ING Direct in Sydney has become the first internationally-recognised Certified Retail Banker (CRB) in Australia. Ankur Sharda, a Senior Manager – Delivery at the Dutch-owned bank joins a growing band of new banking professionals worldwide who are specialists in the booming field of retail banking.

As a certified retail banker, Ankur Sharda is bound by the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct of the London-based Retail Banking Academy. This requires members to act in the best interests of clients at all times and to keep themselves up-to-date with professional developments through continuous professional education (CPD). He passed all three of his professional examinations at the first attempt.

We are delighted to welcome Ankur to the Academy as our first CRB is Australia. We expect many more Australian members over the years ahead”, commented Evelyn Hunter, CEO of the Retail Banking Academy.

Ankur was able to become a Certified Retail Banker within the exceptionally short time of 18 months from beginning his studies, which usually take more like 3 years. When asked how he did it, he said “I made extensive use of the eLearning platform, taking the time to cover all interactive modules and read the online course material”.

The Academy was founded in 2012 to promote the professionalisation of retail banking across the world and is founded in the belief that retail banking is a profession like accountancy and law. It has since enjoyed rapid growth and currently has over 10,000 bankers in some 100 countries studying its programmes.

Michael Lafferty, chairman and founder of the Academy, commented: “Retail banking is fundamentally different from corporate and investment banking. It needs to be run on a standalone basis and thrives as a bank in its own right. Retail is the main source of bank profits in most developed countries and increasingly so in emerging markets. This is why retail banking needs its own professional qualification”.
